Werner Shwab’s final play, performed here as part of Just A Must’s English premiere tour of this previously German language-only production, proved to be nothing if not challenging.

From backstage farces to postmodern deconstruction, theatre has a habit of turning its gaze on itself. This tendency is pushed to breaking point in Werner Schwab's last play, presented in its English-language premiere by Just a Must. In what the Austrian playwright christened his "theatre-extinction comedy", the theatre has ceased to mean and the real world and the stage world are collapsing into one another. As implied in the title, Schwab's is a theatre stumbling towards its death, exhaling its final laboured breaths.

Pour cette énième journée du Festival international du théâtre à Béjaïa, la compagnie autrichienne, Just a Must, a donné la réplique avec une représentation théâtrale intitulée « Sports Play », à la grande salle de la maison de la culture Taous-Amrouche....

Le producteur et la metteur en scène évoquent, dans cet entretien, le spectacle Sports Play qui sera présenté à Béjaïa et à Alger, leur intérêt pour le travail de l’auteure Elfriede Jelinek qui a reçu le prix Nobel en 2004, ainsi que leur compagnie Just a Must créée en 2009....

It's great to see this oft-neglected Austrian writer's work in the UK, and it stands as another great example that there's much theatre in the wider world that we would do well to see more of. The sensation of watching the thing is in fact fairly strange, since the production has managed to pull off that mainland European, postdramatic, post-Brechtian aesthetic so well, despite many of the actors being British. All of which still feels strangely alien to describe as a success in British theatrical terms. And yet, it is. This is an acutely intelligent rendering of an important bit of literature....
