Né en 1947 à Chicago.

Il fait ses études au Goddard College, Vermont et à la Neighbourhood Playhouse School of Theatre à New-York.

American Buffalo a été montée trois ans plus tôt et a gagné l'Obie Award en 1976. Il a reçu le Pulitzer Price 1984 pour sa pièce Glengarry Glen Ross.

David Mamet a touché à la fois aux métiers de scénariste hollywoodien (Le Facteur sonne toujours deux fois, Le Verdict, Hoffa, Hannibal), d'auteur de théâtre (Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Duck Variations, A life in the theatre, Edmond, Oleanna), d'essayiste (Writing in restaurants, On directing film, Some freaks, The Cabin) et de réalisateur de cinéma (L'Honneur des Winslow, La Prisonnière espagnole, Séquences et conséquences).
